Book Reviews

I love to read so occasionally I'll post what I think about the books that I buy. These will be books about electronics, computer interfacing and wacky mad science experiments.

Intermediate Robot Building

Intermediate Robot Building Is a book about building robots. It covers topics starting with mechanics and machining all the way through power supplies, programming, motor control, sound and more.

The power supply chapters alone, are worth the price of the book. David Cook does a great job of describing how to build a simple linear power supply and he describes the components in such great detail that at the end of the discussion you will know how to design a power supply that meets your needs, not just copy some plans blindly. The rest of the information in the book is presented equally well.

This is a great book! It does assume some knowledge and the author has also written Robot Building for Beginners to cover the basics. I don't have the beginner book but based on what I have read of Mr. Cook's work it is worth having if you need a more basic starting point.

Easy Pic'n

Easy Pic'N is a great beginner book for starting on microcontrollers. It is VERY basic so if you already know how to build a test circuit and can download assembler programs to the micro then you may not get a lot out of it. If you are a beginner to microcontroller programming and you need a place to start then you'd have a hard time beating this book.

The author starts by describing what a microcontroller is and how to build a simple test circuit and install the software. The microcontroller that he uses is the Microchip PICMicro 16F84 which is a very popular but very simple chip in the PIC line.

Try the book and let me know what you think.

The Mad Scientist's Notebook

The other day while I was trying to figure out how this website was doing on the search engines I stumbled across this book. It's called The Mad Scientist's Notebook. It's a book full of fun household experiments. Since we are home schooling and science is my job, I am always looking for ways to make science fun. It has some of the old experiments like the lemon juice battery and the colored carnation, but it has enough new ones to make it worth the price.

If you have some budding young scientists at home or you want to make learning science more fun this book is for you.
