Easy Pic'N
is a great beginner book for starting on microcontrollers. It is VERY basic so if you already know how to build a test circuit and can download assembler programs to the micro then you may not get a lot out of it. If you are a beginner to microcontroller programming and you need a place to start then you'd have a hard time beating this book.
The author starts by describing what a microcontroller is and how to build a simple test circuit and install the software. The microcontroller that he uses is the Microchip PICMicro 16F84 which is a very popular but very simple chip in the PIC line.
